Orthopedic Physical Therapy
THE GOAL of physical therapy is to help patients overcome pain and heal from injury or surgery by creating balance and support for the bones, joints and muscles.
HOW INJURIES OCCUR
Poor posture, improper body mechanics with daily activities or exercise, and busy lifestyle demands can lead to muscle imbalances in the system. Over time, these imbalances create an uneven distribution of forces through the joints and can lead to pain and degeneration. These imbalances also create weaknesses that can predispose the body to injuries such as ligament sprains, muscle strains, tendonitis, falls, arthritis, herniated discs and inflammation.
MOVEMENT ANALYSIS
A skilled assessment of biomechanics is critical to restoring proper movement in the body. A trained eye can detect faulty movement patterns and spot areas where the body has learned to compensate for weaknesses.
HANDS-ON APPROACH
Manual therapy is often necessary to break up soft tissue adhesions, stretch extremely tight tissues, relieve muscle tension, increase circulation, and restore health to the body. Techniques such as myofascial release, deep tissue massage, trigger point release, joint mobilization, muscle energy techniques, and craniosacral therapy may be a part of treatment.
MUSCLE RETRAINING
When muscles have been functioning in an imbalanced state, they need to be reeducated to contract and relax properly otherwise pain will return. Guided instruction in therapeutic exercises is an essential element in treatment.

A UNIQUE METHOD
Unlike physical therapy sessions at most clinics, therapists at Debra Goodman Physical Therapy will spend an hour with each patient individually. Patients will never feel rushed. Treatment will be individualized to each patient’s particular needs.
ASSESSMENT OF THE WHOLE PERSON
The region where people have symptoms is often not where the source of the problem lies. Many traditional clinicians only treat the area where the pain is located and never get to the root of the problem causing pain to return. Patients treated at Debra Goodman Physical Therapy will have the benefit of an examination of the whole body, not just the injured site. In addition, a person’s lifestyle, occupation, and emotional state will be taken into account when prescribing treatment regimens.
HANDS-ON APPROACH
Through the use of manual therapy techniques including myofascial release, deep tissue massage, joint mobilization, muscle-energy techniques, and cranial sacral therapy, proper body alignment is restored, and then patients are instructed in a specific exercise program tailored to their individual needs.
